You probably have seen these whimsical light fixtures all around, at your local cafe or a restaurant…  I have!  And when I saw one I always wondered who could come up with such incredible ideas.

David Trubridge is the most progressive furniture and lighting designer. He is based in Havelock North, New Zealand. David’s work is usually produced using only natural materials in order to reduce the effect on the environment.  It’s also made in New Zealand, in oppose of being mass produces in China.

Simplicity and sophistication are two words that describe David Trubridge’s lighting designs.  It’s the shapes of the grassy plants or fluffy clouds that come to life in his work.  All the different lines and shapes of nature gave David the inspiration for creating these beautiful fixtures.

An Australian Red Design Group took a different approach creating this fun space for the candy store. The sugar-free candy company known as Sweet Enough has decided to open up one of their own retail locations which is called the Candy Room.  The Candy Room is located in Melbourne, Australia.  The whole space looks like it was drown with crayons by a talented kid. It almost reminds me of a coloring book with black outline which makes you want to get out your own crayons and start coloring.

The overall white background with black trim outline accentuates the bright colors of the candies.

Everything including the clock is graphically applied line artwork.  The produced suggestive elements of a room include a kitchen backsplash, a boiling pot on the stove and even a framed portrait of one of the kids. The selected light fixtures perfectly complement this wire-frame style.

RED was also responsible for the branding and all the packaging throughout the store.

John Dufficy worked as a carpenter for over twenty years before getting into making furniture.  Furniture design and hand making it has become his life for the last ten years now.  Today I’d love to share some of John’s inspiring work.

One of the most overlooked ways to add vibrancy to your kitchen is using a back painted glass. Back painted colored glass is custom installed, but has many applications:

• painted glass backsplashes
• colored glass countertops
• kitchen islands
• colored glass table tops
• cabinet glass inserts
• decorative colored glass walls

Perhaps one of the most difficult tasks for a design firms is to design your own office.  What would you create if you were one of the most creative Holland’s design firms?  Maurice Mentjens Design is a creative design and animation studio in Holland. And their space reminds me of a control center left after a war.

Trendhunter described the space as “a retro space station and a secret agent training facility.” Mostly concrete filled space has random splashes of bright color to stimulate your imagination.

Overall simple and futuristic feel of the space  is intriguing. I would definitely like to work in a space like this.

Two talented architects, Jose Selgas and Lucia Cano, have created this inspiring and at the same time one of the most simplest office buildings.  Selgascano, a Spanish design firm, located their new studio in the middle of the woods outside of Madrid.

The whole building is shaped as a one-story pipe or a tunnel hiding among tall trees and grass.  Half of the curved roof, the side facing north, is transparent, allowing the sunlight be the natural illumination for the office occupants.  The bottom part of the “tube” is below the ground level, which makes the desks almost leveling with the grass.

The interior’s lime green and yellow colors create cheerful atmosphere to the overall space complementing the colors of nature outside the glass.

Somehow, being such a contemporary building, this architects’ office is not too disruptive to the nature around.

For many of us working in some of the world’s demoralizing, low-ceiling, dark buildings in the busiest areas of major cities this office is like a dream come true.

Alannah Hill (born in 1963) is an Australian fashion designer who is well known for her “girly chic” fashion label and boutique chain.  Today I’d like to share the glimpse of the main office interior design of Alannah Hill operation.

This once run down Melbourne warehouse has been transformed into the dreamy world of a fashion label Alannah Hill by a very talented architect David Hicks. The shell of the warehouse had to be structurally upgraded, but the feel of the old building has been retained.

The designer brought together the incredible combination of the old industrial structure -  the ceiling trusses, exposed brickwork and giant barn doors -  with the softness and fun of the interior furnishings.

These large slate blue velvet armchairs are shaped as eggs go really well with the light weight chandeliers up above. Tall glass wall runs along the wall used by the models, which also makes the space even larger.

Not only this project is green by reusing an old building, it’s also fun and inspiring by the playfulness of the overall experience. Who would not be happy to go to work in an office like this one?

The elements of rustic design appeal to many people at first sight as well as on a deep, subconscious level. I find that earthy spaces with natural decor materials draw folks in, whether it’s into a lodge in the mountains or into bustling new york city apartments or hotels. The visual qualities created by rough, unfinished wood, flowers and other plant materials, and touches of naturally weathered metals can lend a sense of peace and bring back thoughts of childhood moments spent outside enjoying the natural world. I remember walking through the woods next to a stream and exploring for hours on end as a child, but have not engaged in such activities for years because of hectic schedules and family and business obligations. This is true for most, if not all, American adults in the present day. We long for those moments of contentment and a connection to the earth that we don’t often feel in modern cities and suburbs.

When I walk into a New York hotel lobby that incorporates a glass and chrome design structure, I barely notice my surroundings. We expect this type of design and decor so much that it ceases to be impressive even if it’s well done. Baroque, Elizabethan or Colonial moldings and marble tiling are also somewhat overdone in urban hotel and apartment lobbies. If I walk into a lobby in the middle of the city and find a big log fireplace and rustic design, however, I have to pause for a moment and remind myself that I’m in the middle of the city and not stepping into a ski lodge or mountain retreat.

Rustic decor can look up-to-date and modern. It does not have to be old fashioned or stuffy and can even have a feminine flair with the use of silk flower and delicate tree branch arrangements. Large vases and urns that contain substantial dried plant arrangements lend a rustic touch when placed in the corners of a lobby or meeting room. Creative interior designers can lean either way, making the rustic space either more hunting lodge or more romantic 19th and early 20th century Americana.

Cutting edge landscape designers place concrete accents, weathered wood furniture and pergolas, and wild plants and grasses in urban courtyards and rooftop gardens. The rustic atmosphere creates an oasis where busy city dwellers can relax and take in a bit of nature. I find that people who spend most of their time in the city and don’t get out of town much appreciate the contrast between the city and these small rustic areas the most. Our eyes are innately attracted to plants and greenery, and the harmonious lines of tree branches and tall grasses speak to our subconscious urge to get back to nature.

Rustic Americana doesn’t simply provide decoration. Designers can incorporate useful items like old steamer trunks used as tables and antique wagon wheels to separate sitting areas from one another. Comfortable, overstuffed leather couches and armchairs fit right in with the rustic design.

I find that the many aspects of rustic design elements have actually increased in popularity in the early 21st century. Our longing for a simpler time has a lot to do with the popularity of this design choice.
