Interactive architecture has always been my passion.  Today I’d love to introduce a new interactive surface material created by B.Lab, an Italian company.

Interactive Architecture

Imagine the ability to leave your footprints on a floor surface as you walk across a room, which will fade away in a few seconds…  How fun would that be?  What if your steps could also change the color of the surface you are walking on?

Interactive Flooring

What if you could see the same effect on a table at a local restaurant or a bar? Opportunities are endless with this new surface material called B-Surfaces.

So how does it work? According to Transmaterial.net, “Metal Series” surfaces contain liquids infused with metal particles that are trapped within resilient a polymer shell.” This creates a sensitive floor tile or horizontal surface that responds to pressure or an electric charge. User’s touch is temporarily recorded by the fluids, and a high-level static charge allows a prolonged “drawing” within the surface.

The surface has been used in stores, nightclubs, restaurants, bars, cafes and even children’s facilities. The material’s liquid colors are non toxic and do no harm in case of a human contact.
