In the heart of San Diego’s vibrant Hillcrest neighborhood, a new taco shop was ready to bring a taste of creative Mexican cuisine with a side of bold design. Offering mouthwatering dishes from handcrafted tacos to house-made salsas and signature chorizo, Crest Taco wanted to wow its customers with culinary creativity and efficient service. To match its unapologetic brand, it also needed an equally striking physical presence that would create an unforgettable first impression—a taco kiosk design that would turn heads.
This is where we entered their story. The site chosen for the future taco kiosk was, to put it mildly, a sad sight. It was a cluster of old walls, mismatched colors, and damaged surfaces that made the structure unusable in its initial state.
Some signs of a presumed former glory were still visible in the outdoor area of the kiosk, but the old fashioned tables and benches, despite their colorful mosaic surfaces, were nothing to boast about.
Despite its location in a high visibility area, the former building seemed to have nothing worth showing off. Its run down condition made a complete makeover essential.
There was, however, one redeeming attribute that sparked both interest and intention. The former structure still retained a retro style that we wanted to preserve with a sense of nostalgia, including a very distinctive sawtooth roofline that we aimed to incorporate into the new design.
Taking a close look at the original structure, we chose to make these elements the starting point for the new kiosk’s design while modernizing it to honor the building’s spirit and character within the neighborhood.
And here’s our new design, a full reimagining of a formerly uninpsiring site, that retains the building’s unique architectural touches. The result is a fun mix of nostalgic charm and modern edge. Designed to make Crest Taco stand out for more than just its bold flavors, the new taco kiosk uses a light, bright, and sunny palette, with organic details, patterned surfaces, and an overall feel-good vibe that draws the eye and sparks curiosity.
Making the transition from forgotten to unforgettable, the new taco kiosk design stands out thanks to a few cleverly reimagined elements. First, we turned the sawtooth roofline into the defining feature of the entire structure by painting its sides a bright yellow, matching the outdoor signage and tying in with the company’s logo. In an area full of sharp, orderly angles, this bold choice never fails to grab the involuntary attention of passersby.
Recessed lighting installed beneath the roof structure casts a generous glow over the outdoor area, keeping it well illuminated, inviting, and lively even in the late hours of the day.
Anchoring the roof, supporting columns take on a second role by transitioning into the seating area. This space is defined by elegant outdoor metal partitions with built-in planters, all finished in sleek black for a clean, contemporary look. The partitions create a sense of privacy for customers while still allowing street-side watching. The addition of greenery transforms the area into a small urban oasis, a feeling further enhanced by the cheerful colors of the umbrellas, which beautifully contrast with the black. Like little bursts of sun, the umbrellas bring a playful, joyful vibe to the space.
The kiosk’s Mexican cuisine is celebrated through the use of Hispanic-inspired tiles that line the exterior walls. Black-and-white patterns keep the building bright while adding a classic, timeless design with universal appeal. These tiles alternate with exterior wood cladding, introducing textural and chromatic contrasts. This combination creates a more natural, warm, and organic feel, allowing the building to stand out and keeping the white tiles in view, which might otherwise blend into the background despite their contemporary elegance.
Large windows enclose the kiosk’s interior, putting it fully on display and opening it up to the eyes of customers. This openness creates a sense of trust and honesty while also making the building feel lighter, more modern, and brighter. The increased natural light benefits both the space and the well-being of employees, who maintain a visual connection with the outside. Following the zigzagging line of the roof, the shape of the windows mirrors its dynamic geometry, reinforcing the playful, unique character of the kiosk.
Defined by their black frames and contours and contrasting with the black tables, the chairs introduce a second organic element with their natural wood accents. The black door ties into this language of lines and shapes, reinforcing the kiosk’s structured design.
The completed taco kiosk design introduces a bold new presence to the market and the location—a building full of personality that stands out and invites passersby to approach, take a closer look, and give it a try.

Durable metal countertops resist wear and tear and provide an easy-to-clean surface for a space that sees a lot of activity. A large, open area surrounding the countertop ensures smooth and comfortable customer flow.
Large planters with a strong presence help define the outdoor area in our completed project. They allow for more greenery, supporting larger plants and creating a lush, relaxing atmosphere.
The counters wrap around the kiosk on three sides, creating an inviting and approachable layout. This setup allows customers to move easily around the kiosk, and makes the area feel open and welcoming.
The final taco kiosk is more than just a place to grab a meal—it’s an example of an excellent gathering space. Textural contrasts, the elegant use of colors, and the presence of greenery combine to create a rich sensory experience. The space feels lively yet comfortable, encouraging people to pause, enjoy their surroundings, and savor the moment.
Above all, the rooftop line remains the most distinctive element in a design that reinforces the Crest Taco brand. Its zigzagging form draws the eye from afar, creating instant recognition and a memorable silhouette. By keeping this iconic feature at the heart of the design, we envision the kiosk becoming a neighborhood landmark, radiating street-side energy that draws people in.
