Bubble tea shop with cool industral accents.

After building a loyal local following with its first store in Huntsville, Alabama, Leafly Boba Bar is expanding with a second location in Birmingham. Having designed the original store, we were excited to help this growing small business take the next step by creating a new space that stays true to its brand image.

The new store shows how a brand can be carried from one location to another through cohesive and recognizable design, while still adapting to the requirements and unique characteristics of a different space. The final outcome is a boba tea bar design that feels familiar to existing customers while staying true to the personality and vibe that made the first location successful.

The same elements that defined the first store make a return here, from the color palette and geometric forms to the materials and the overall feel of the wall graphics. The layout is, of course, specific to this space, and details in the treatment of key design features give the interior its own distinct character while working within the framework of the brand.

Similarly to the first location, the brand’s signature yellow, black, and gray are layered against a neutral backdrop that softens their intensity and allows them to stand out. White 3D wall tile behind the counter, a light-toned quartz countertop, a traffic-resistant gray concrete floor, and light-painted walls create a breathable foundation onto which color can build.

The large wall graphics, which stylize the idea of boba tea as a refreshing splash of color and energy, are one of the defining elements of the brand. Here, they are paired with a green wall featuring the company logo in the form of an oversized neon sign. A swing creates a natural invitation for customers to stop, relax, and snap a photo, encouraging organic social media exposure. We paid particular attention to the lighting in this area to ensure that photos taken here reflect the quality and atmosphere of the business.

We also used the available wall space to communicate the company’s philosophy, recognizing that brand values do not have to be confined to packaging, printed materials, or online platforms when the interior itself can help tell the story.

The boba bar is designed to have a cool, laid-back vibe that invites a younger crowd to socialize and mingle over a few treats, so the overall design feels open, airy, and relaxed. While the seating area offers generous seating for a relatively small space, the layout is carefully arranged to maintain an easy flow and an uncluttered feel.

The industrial character of the stools contributes to the youthful, urban image of the brand and is reflected in the black metal door frame and the exposed yet painted ceiling. Even the merchandise display shelf follows the same minimalist approach favored by many modern consumers. At the same time, wood elements incorporated into the furniture soften the industrial aesthetic with the warmth of natural color and texture.

Even though a variety of seating options are offered, making full use of the available space, the large communal tables are designed to bring people together and encourage a sense of community.

We believe that a layered lighting approach is essential both for creating a warm atmosphere and for emphasizing the details that are considered important. In the absence of abundant natural light, we used lighting design to maximize brightness throughout the space. A mirror was also introduced to amplify light and create the illusion of a larger interior.

Rather than darkening the space, the black-painted ceiling has the opposite effect, creating a sense of depth and almost an infinite spatial quality.

The different types of light pendants introduce both color and architectural form into the design. Circular LED chandeliers are mixed with yellow pendants over the counter, along with other visually striking pieces placed above different tables and throughout the space, creating a slightly different atmosphere in every corner of the store.

An attractive and distinctive detail is the ribbed effect created through the curved counter design with its front counter tiling. A similar treatment can be found in the yellow soffits, while the walls continue the same approach, allowing different elements to visually converse with each other across the space.

Open shelving and a minimalist countertop window display keep the space uncluttered. The use of glass introduces transparency into the design and helps the small location feel open, airy, and visually light.

From the placement of the menu board right at the entrance, both welcoming customers and ensuring strong functionality, to the masterful use of the vibrant brand yellow that emphasizes the architecture and brings energy to the space, every detail has been carefully considered. The curved architectural forms, reminiscent of flowing boba tea, reinforce this sense of movement and fluidity. Each element of this boba tea bar design contributes to the brand message, the customer experience, and a memorable, recognizable identity.
