La Michoacana Frozen Creations Transforms a Former Loan Space into a Vibrant Destination – Before and After

Mindful Design Consulting led yet another stunning transformation of an old building into a vibrant dessert shop in Los Angeles, California. Once an unassuming structure at the forefront of a small plaza, its only advantage was its immediate proximity to the flow of cars and pedestrians, ready to be converted into customers. With a fresh, eye-catching Mexican dessert store design, this spot has now become a spectacular new addition to the local map.

With its high-quality Mexican desserts like paletas, bolis and cups, La Michoacana needed a space that would reflect the color, flavor and joy that its products bring to customers. The initial state of the former Quick Cash Loan building was, however, far from inspiring. This nondescript structure, with its tired color, could only be described as an eyesore.

Inside, the narrow space felt cramped, with dull cream-colored walls, unattractive drop ceilings, and the uninspiring look of an outdated office.

The only advantage was the row of large windows that lined the entire length of the building, potentially allowing in a generous amount of light. The space, however, needed a complete makeover.

Beyond the suspended ceilings, the exposed wiring and HVAC ducts posed an additional aesthetic challenge.

After a thorough evaluation, we began crafting a design that would completely transform this lifeless space into a vibrant, inviting destination for dessert lovers. The new Mexican dessert store design, brimming with color and layered details, was envisioned to draw in passersby, making even a short visit irresistible.

Given the space’s narrow and uninspiring layout, we used bold colors, lively patterns and a few curved elements to create an environment that invites exploration, with something new to see at every turn. We started with a warm color palette of pink, purple and yellow tones, accented by earthy greens and browns, with striking touches of black and white for added drama.

We used color to create simple yet impactful wall graphics that play on the dual themes of dessert and Mexican inspiration. The flowing ice cream mirrors the contours of a dessert landscape or cascades down toward a vibrant expanse of sprinkles. These vivid details, combining bold and pastel tones, transform the initially dull walls into a dynamic landscape of color, shapes and patterns.

To balance this wealth of detail, we used black and white stripes to tone down the color palette and add a touch of elegance to the otherwise lighthearted design. While a vertical arrangement would have looked classic and structured, a diagonal layout aligns with the playful theme and helps elongate the space, directing the eye toward the next detail.

We extended the same striped pattern to the floor, expanding this neutral area to create a dramatic backdrop for the colorful furniture and counter. A wall of white hexagonal tiles extends behind the counter, allowing the other colors to pop while keeping the space fresh and clean.

The seating area, lined along the large windows and opposite wall, features a simple arrangement that allows for easy customer flow and provides an excellent view of the street. The pink, yellow and teal colors of the chairs add an extra layer of vibrancy, while the long table fosters a sense of community.

After removing the drop ceiling, the existing wooden slats were used to create a 3-D landscape, complemented by spherical pendant lights in pastel colors. The varying heights of the light fixtures create a dynamic effect, evoking the look of floating bubbles and adding a whimsical touch to the space.

The front counter captures attention with its sunny vibes and bold blocks of color. We used this area to introduce curved lines, softening the overall look of the store. The curved soffits mirror the lines of the counter, creating a layered ceiling effect. The service area benefits from recessed lighting that highlights it, making the space easily visible from the street.

A large neon sign featuring the store’s logo is placed near one of the entrances. This area also serves as a perfect selfie wall, allowing customers to immortalize their visit and create free promotion for the store by sharing their pictures.

The store has two entrances that, along with the large windows, allow light to enter from three directions. We repainted the exterior walls to contrast with the colorful interior, ensuring that the vibrant space is visible and inviting from the outside.

The window offers a stunning view of the interior. The vibrant, joyful colors, paired with the warmth of the generous lighting and rich details, entice passersby to enter, explore and linger.

The La Michoacana Frozen Creations logo was also a creation of Mindful Design Consulting. We provided our client with the Pantone colors used in the logo design for future branding consistency and applications.

To complete our work on this Mexican dessert store design, we created business cards that reflect the same playful colors and graphics, ensuring consistency with the brand’s overall identity.
