The only thing better than eating dessert is eating dessert in an opulent Victorian decor. Carbon, a London-based design studio, goes even further. It creates this opportunity in the form of a cupcake kiosk in the middle of the Al Wahda Mall in Abu Dhabi.
As the first international location of Bea’s of Bloomsbury café from London, this spectacular cupcake store hits all the marks. The design has the character and elegance of Victorian interior design, with sophisticated wall decor, complex patterns and details, rich colors and even the omnipresent molding.
However, the Victorian elements are toned down and made more approachable by the smart use of modern elements. Clean-lined display areas that add transparency through the presence of glass, mid-century high stools and display windows with strict geometric lines – they all simplify the decor and keep it true to the character of a retail space that offers passers-by a quick treat.
The space is enclosed, giving the store identity and making it stand by itself in the middle of a busy mall. With the Bea’s of Bloomsbury cupcake kiosk, Carbon achieved a modular design, adaptable to the specifics of other locations.
Built on a “theatre” metaphor, the kiosk invites customers to admire the cupcakes before devouring them. The succession of architectural frames contributes to the feeling that something new awaits behind the corner, ready to be admired and enjoyed.
