Turning an ice-cream outing into a cherished tradition and harnessing the power of nostalgia in the design of a local gathering place may very well be the secret to a dessert shop’s success. This was exactly the vision behind Batch 3 Ice Cream, a high-quality homemade ice-cream shop designed to feel playful, approachable, and indulgent all at once.
Located in Maple Valley, WA, Batch 3 Ice Cream was intended from the beginning as a place that breaks from the outside world and pulls customers into a whimsical escape. From teenagers dropping in after school to families building memories together one scoop at a time, the shop’s diverse customer base is treated not only to exceptional homemade ice cream, but to spectacular surroundings that turn every visit into an experience.

Since this type of design has a unique ability to evoke family time and tradition, we drew on the nostalgic qualities of vintage American interiors. While the space was envisioned as a layered, exuberant interplay of color and detail, we introduced modern, clean lines to balance and frame this visual richness.
Another key inspiration was the world of fairytales, where mysterious surroundings conceal fantastical characters. Ultimately, the space became an entirely enchanted world, where every element contributes to the narrative, from color and graphics to materials, and even the way customers are guided through the store.

The chromatic palette was generous, allowing us to create something reminiscent of an illustrated scene. However, we kept the background architecture within a more restrained palette of dark and light greens, interspersed with blue tones, subtly referencing nature and grounding the space. The entrance into this world is intended to feel like stepping into the pages of a storybook, where visitors move through a living narrative.
Every now and then, we introduced deliberately artificial forms, such as the geometric, nature-inspired wall tiles behind the counter or the black-and-white lattice-patterned partition. These elements introduce a measured contrast, balancing the more expressive features of the design. In doing so, they gently remind the eye of the constructed nature of the environment, anchoring its fantastical qualities in the present.

The entrance to the store is intentionally immersive, with large wall graphics that prepare customers for what is to come. The shapes, colors, and dimensions create a sense of depth and spatial layering, where one can lose oneself. To avoid visual overstimulation, however, one of the walls is painted in a light, solid block color. Advancing along this path, past the entrance, the full world of the space suddenly unfolds.

While angles are necessary architectural lines, we made extensive use of curves and flowing forms, incorporating organic design elements through both the shape of the furniture and the choice of materials. One of the first such elements to bring the design to life, shifting it from the two-dimensional realm of wall graphics into the three-dimensional experience of the space, is the colored concrete floor.
Its organic, irregular composition of blue and green evokes the flow of a river through lush meadows. While this introduces vitality to an otherwise highly practical, low-maintenance surface, it also serves a functional purpose by subtly guiding circulation throughout the store.

Entering the store, one is immediately immersed in a world of visual detail. Every element of the design is intended to be observed, explored, and appreciated. The menu boards come instantly into view, with their vibrant colors and window-like shapes, almost suggesting a glimpse into another world. A line of cloud-shaped light fixtures elicits a sense of playfulness and further animates the concept. The organic design of some of the chairs introduces another visual cue that bridges the two-dimensional graphics with the three-dimensional experience of the space, making the fairytale world feel palpable.

Such details are essential in this space, as they give customers something to continually engage in. Even the ceiling becomes a landscape. Painted in a deep shade of green and softened by the soffit above the counter, it evokes a canopy of greenery, enhanced by the variations in texture across elements and finishes.

The seating area is generous and offers multiple options, from upholstered benches designed to invite longer stays, to space-saving chairs and counter-height stools. The scalloped relief of the bench backrest softens the rectangular geometry of the windows, continuing the idea of a world observed from a slightly removed vantage point, like looking out from within a sheltered, storybook setting.
The large windows provide abundant natural daylight, while also offering a connection to the street, allowing guests to comfortably take in the view outside.

While easy to navigate, the space does not allow itself to become boring. A partition wall, doubling as a merchandise display for those waiting at the counter, helps divide the space into distinct zones, while the seating area wrapping around the counter invites exploration and movement through the space.

All the visual details become a source of interest and play for children, while also offering ease for parents, and a sense of wonder and delight for all adults. However, we took this a step further by creating a dedicated play area for children, complete with a hidden 2D door and tree-trunk stools. This is a space designed for curiosity, discovery and imaginative play.

The furniture selection for this area was delightful in itself. Another fitting choice, complementing the wall graphics, was a set of mushroom-shaped tables and stools. This transformed the area into a real-life adventure for the young guests.

The play corner can also function as a selfie spot, though the entire store offers countless opportunities to pause and capture moments. Integrated into the wall graphics, an oversized logo by the counter serves as a bold focal point, naturally lending itself to social media visibility and organic promotion.

Complementing the generous natural daylight, a layered combination of lighting fixtures was employed to both illuminate the space and complete the design. Recessed and track systems, intended for work areas or to highlight the wall graphics, are paired with pendant fixtures of varying shapes, transparency, and intensity, together creating a lighting composition in which light itself tells a story.
Among them, minimalist green fixtures with transparent shades introduce a sense of delicacy and the elegance of glass, an essential counterbalance to a space that is bold and assertive.

In the same effort to bring a fairytale world to life, wood elements were introduced throughout the interior. Whether in the stools by the counter, the wainscoting, or the display shelves, wood makes the space feel more approachable and warm. It also allows merchandise to be displayed throughout the store in a simple and appealing way.
Additional merchandise, namely perishable items, is presented in a refrigerated display near the entrance, a location that customers naturally pass and where they may also be waiting to place their orders.

We envisioned Batch 3 Ice Cream as more than a destination for ice cream: a place for the community to come together, talk, and share joyful moments. A character in its own right, this space is designed to be talked about, remembered, and cherished. It is, beyond anything else, a place meant to leave a lasting impression in memory, becoming one where today’s children and tomorrow’s adults will always want to return.
