Lovers of Japanese culture and sweet treats who happen to live near—or pass through—Milpitas, California now have a new reason to rejoice. We recently completed the Crepe Shibuya Japanese dessert store design, envisioned as a special go-to destination for both children and adults in the community and beyond. Offering authentic desserts made with ingredients sourced directly from Japan and paired with playful Gashapon toy vending machines, the space is an interactive experience inspired by this fascinating culture, where flavor and fun come together.
If the store offers hard-to-resist treats like Japanese crepes, savory sushi crepes, and a lineup of drinks, desserts, and ice creams (purple yam and chestnut paste are just two of the standout flavors), we felt it deserved a background as sensory-filled as the menu. So we designed a sleek, modern space where Japanese essence peeks through in both the overall atmosphere and the accents, creating a place where entertainment meets culinary artistry.
The whole space is a nod to Japanese design, where smart functionality meets clean-lined elegance and calm balance. We wanted to capture that vibrant spirit, but through subtle hints rather than full-on imported aesthetics. The result feels rooted in the community while still carrying a gentle echo of the culture that inspired it.
We chose a layered palette, starting with a neutral foundation and introducing warm accents like red and orange, colors closely tied to traditional Japanese aesthetics. Other elements reinforce the same visual language: sleek chairs that echo the look of bamboo, organic-shaped dramatic pendants, and wooden wall panels with integrated LED lighting.
The furniture is minimalist and the space is designed for functionality. The store offers a variety of seating options, from upholstered chairs and a bench in a cozy wall nook to counter-height stools and window seating. Black counter-height tables add a bold contrast, playing against the calm, comforting presence of the natural wood tables, while the light-colored window counter provides a subtle, understated presence.
Despite the variety of seating options, the space still feels orderly and clean. That strict order is softened by a curved floor design that slices through the wood-grain ceramic flooring, guiding traffic with an elegant gesture while adding visual interest. The flooring transition introduces another material into the design—terrazzo-like tile.
An open counter with a glass display offers an appetizing spectacle of crepe-making in action. Visitors can watch the desserts being prepared right before their eyes, an irresistible preview that makes them even more ready to dig in. Above it, sleek glass pendants add a refined contrast to the warm wooden soffits. LED strips highlight the counter and complete a lighting strategy designed to shape the space, sharpen the details, and gently glow all at once.
An entire area is dedicated to the iconic Gashapon capsule toy machines, the Japanese vending units that dispense surprise collectibles inside plastic capsules. This fun, interactive element brings the energy of Japanese street-style entertainment culture into the space, turning the corner into a mini destination of its own.
We took great care in lighting this zone to attract attention while keeping the warm, inviting feel of the space. Here, wooden elements help balance the modern, glossy look of the machines, creating a cozy yet lively corner that feels both fun and grounded.
The Japanese dessert–themed customized wallpaper framing the bench nook faces a more dramatic wall graphic featuring an oversized logo and a photo-ready slogan that serves as a convenient selfie wall. The spot lighting, combined with the excellent natural light streaming in through the floor-to-ceiling windows makes this the perfect spot for selfies, which can act as powerful and free marketing tools for the company.
The natural materials and tones—from wood panels to stone-look ceramic tiles—provide a satisfying variety of textures, making the space feel rich and deep despite its disciplined color palette. The neutral colors also help the vibrant graphics stand out.
The restroom design extends the store’s aesthetic, incorporating the same color palette, natural materials, layered lighting, and an overall feeling of cleanliness, functionality, and elegant simplicity.
This Japanese dessert store design is based on the branding strategy we developed and outlined in the brandbook, which includes all visual elements of the identity, including the logo.
We created customized designs for the store’s paper and packaging collateral, including paper bags, wrapping paper, cups, to-go boxes, labels, and cone sleeves, as well as business and gift cards, window graphics, and banners.
