As the only awards in the world that are focused exclusively on food and drink spaces, The Restaurant and Bar Design Awards are coveted by top designers around the world. On October 1st, the 2015 awards were announced in London. Here are some of the winners in a selection that goes from elegant to cool.
London Restaurant Winner: The Gallery at Sketch, London – India Mahdavi
A monochromatic design with a retro vibe, the Gallery at Sketch is an outburst of pink balanced by copper accents. Generously padded, all-enveloping chairs pair up with cotton velvet-covered banquettes in the same pink tone, while the exuberant colors of the chevron-patterned tile break the chromatic uniformity. Around the walls, a large collection of drawings by David Shrigley provides both visual contrast and intellectual entertainment.
Europe Bar Winner: Le Bar du Plaza Athénée, France – Jouin Manku
Taking inspired liberties with the design of this interior, Jouin Manku added a waving mass of blue fabric to the ceiling vaults, evoking a turbulent night sky. Yet the image is far from frightening. The unexpected texture of the fabric softens the interior, creating a romantic ambiance.
London Bar Winner: WC, London – Jayke Mangion and Andy Bell
When it comes to restorative projects, WC Wine and Charcuterie takes the cake. Turning a century-old public toilet in South West London into a bar allowed the two ingenious entrepreneurs to come up with a quirky interior. This was in large due to the fact that old features were preserved, such as cracking tiles and concrete that shows the passing of time. But the charm of the place lies in the details. During renovation, for instance, old love letters were found behind the wall tiles. Now, they are displayed in the bar’s restrooms.
Restaurant or Bar in a Retail Space Winner: The Street Kitchen, Nottingham – Dalziel and Pow Design Consultants
Street food meets cozy interior in this original space. An eclectic design combines vintage furniture, rustic accents and market counters, but the two colorful vans are the ones that catch the eye. Food is prepared behind their walls. The place offers the patrons the unique chance to simultaneously experience the freedom of the outdoors and the coziness of the indoors.
Standalone Bar or Club Winner: Le Peep Boutique, London – Nick Leith Smith
LED ceilings displaying scenes from Paris. Windows with silhouettes of Javanese puppetry. Vibrant colors and soft light creating a surreal experience. It is a winning package for the London nightclub designed to draw crowds looking for unique experiences.
