With an interior washed in white and antlered skulls covering the walls, it is no wonder why this restaurant bears the name Hueso—the Spanish word for bone.

Restaurant Interior Design

Located in Guadalajara in the heart of Mexico, designer Ignacio Cadena’s Hueso is, at first glance, a sea of bright white, but it is the strange array of objects that almost completely cover the walls that really draw the eye. From the baseline up to the lofted second floor, utensils and cookware hang from the walls among various bones and skulls, while framed anatomical paintings are nestled in between. The appearance of everyday objects such as spoons, forks, and plates clash with the mix of crude, primitive bones and yet keeps consistent with the overall scheme.

Beneath your feet, white ceramic tiles cover the floor in a smooth, geometric style. Light reflects off of the white, keeping the open, high ceiling of the restaurant very well lit. The walls, where they can be seen, are white painted exposed brick, providing a rough and textured contrast to the clean look of the tiles.

In stark juxtaposition to the rest of the décor, long natural wooden tables stand out to remind guests of the real focus of the restaurant—dining. At one point, the unpainted table even tiers down and continues on as the ceiling takes a dip beneath the lofted seating area above. Running nearly the entire length of the restaurant, and with wooden classic café style chairs lining either side, the long blocky table provides the sense of community. Yet, to tie in the design theme, arrangements of bones act as centerpieces.

Winner of the 2014 Interior Design Best of Year award, Cadena’s restaurant, Heso, acts as an intriguing museum of bone structure, keeping both the eyes and the stomach satisfied.
