Combining the appeal of sweet treats with the advantages of a usually small space, dessert stores are excellent opportunities for interior designers to use their creativity and bold ideas. Some dream up and bring to life interiors that turn these stores into veritable places of pilgrimage for Instagram-loving locals and tourists alike. Here are only a few such clever dessert shop design ideas from around the world.
The Dessert Kitchen, a dessert shop located in the Ren He Town Mall, Chengdu, China, is the very definition of “making an entrance” translated into design terms. Created by the Shanghai-based architecture firm Towodesign, the store captures the attention of passers-by with a colorful, ingenious and impossible-to-miss yellow structure that looks like a huge piece of cheese.

This “cheese” table extends onto the wall, where it plays the decorative role of a façade while providing separation from the inside area. The same concept is reused inside, in the construction of the main counter that brings a pop of color to a mainly white interior. As a smart touch, bright yellow light pendants seem to have “found” the pieces missing in the cheese. The creators of this stunning design make excellent use of the connection between sight and taste, stimulating customers’ appetite for culinary adventures.

When it comes to making a striking visual impact, there is no better place than Café Yeonnam-Dong 223-14 in Seoul, South Korea. The cartoon-themed shop plays with the concepts of reality and illusion by making every element of its interior design (and not only) look pen-drawn and confusingly two-dimensional. The optical illusion caused by outlining each of these elements in black makes visitors question their own eyes and provides endless visual entertainment.

The café, whose interior design is the creation of founder and owner Eun-Jin Lee, is the second of this kind, opened in response to the overwhelming success of the first location. Proving the marketing power of clever dessert shop design ideas, the store provides many opportunities for Instagram-worthy pictures, from its interior to the curious mix of “real” and “drawn” in the way the food is served.

Trying to achieve the same strong visual impact and turn interior design into an adventure, the Valencia-based design studio Clap created the interior of the fashion store and café Her in Hong Kong. Designed to attract both fashion and gastronomy lovers, the café invites customers into a world that waits to be explored.

Terracotta tiles create a “mountainous” Mars-like landscape while details such as aluminum partitions and portholes evoke the build and feel of a spacecraft. Not accidentally, other elements of design – from stools to light pendants – are round-shaped and made of white luminous materials, evoking the planets and the suns in the sky. In the middle of this unusual landscape, customers are invited to browse, sit and enjoy coffee and cookies.
